Don't Post when you are Emotional
I am about to do something contrary to the topic of this post just to overemphasize my point. I have been abhorring this in my mind for a while now and i am sure a lot of celebrities can relate to this. Posting on social media when angry or exited can come naturally to us all but from my experience as a P.R and handling accounts for some A list artiste and brands i have come to realize that you might be doing more harm than good if you let yourself be carried away by emotions rather than deductive reasoning when expressing yourself online.
The internet is a global village where anybody is your next door neighbor with access to see every thing you post online just like when you wash your dirty linen at your backyard and hang them up on a line in front of your house.
For this reason i tell people all the time to learn to RESPOND to comments online and not to REACT to them. A very good example is the recent beef that came up between Linda Ikeji the blogger and Wizkid the singer when they both publicly humiliated themselves online in my own opinion because they were over whelmed by emotions which in turn took the better part of them.
I will share some tips you can utilize below to help you avoid some awkward positions in future online.
- Respond to comments don't react: When you see something annoying or interesting online about you or someone you know its best you stay calm by all means necessary because you might end up saying things that you will later regret. By "respond" i mean you need to think before you give an answer to any negative post about you or your brand. In some cases responding does not necessarily mean you have to say anything. Silence can be a very good responds in some scenario unlike reacting which usually gives the commentator the upper hand. Wizkid could have just easily ignored the post Linda ikeji did of him but instead he let his emotions do the talking for him online and that in turn landed him in police station for questioning because he threatened Linda.
- Give Time: I know a lot of people believe that silence is consents but when it comes to social media the reverse is the case. from facebook to twitter and instagam to whatsapp and now snapchat and periscope, we all bounce from one network to another on a daily bases with numerous eyes on every single thing we do, some time we need to step back a bit and just think. Staying away can help you kill the noise and if you are patient enough another viral video or trending topic will come up online and over ride yours.
- consults experts before you speak: What i am trying to say is that you do not really have to pay someone for this if you are not a public figure with a professional to help with press releases and the likes, you can just share you thoughts with a third party like a friend or family member to help you evaluate your words before you share them online for the whole world to see.
I hope i have been helpful but before i go one very important tip when it comes to social media is don't say a single thing when you have just experienced heart break or drunk because nothing you say then will every make sense...i am speaking from experience....please share your experience below.
