Now lets look at the facts here so we can determine how effective this bill would be if it was passed.
The "Social Media Bill" was meant to persecute offenders of some social media platforms among others, it provides as follow: “Where any person through text message, tweets, WhatsApp or through any social media post any abusive statement knowing same to be false with intent to set the public against any person and group of persons, an institution of government or such other bodies established by law shall be guilty of an offence and upon conviction, shall be liable to an imprisonment for two years or a fine of N2,000,000.00 or both fine and imprisonment.”
Lets not talk about the obstruction of the freedom of speech right in our constitution as a democratic nation, that will be too direct lets look at the bigger picture, can you imagine the amount of people who talk trash about the government on blogs and facebook on a daily bases? they must be ready to arrest more than half the citizens of this country and also those in the diaspora. If you don't want people to talk trash about your government then stop giving them reasons.
This whole thing will be a pour waste of government founds, they dont even have the resources to monitor social media effectively, in my own opinion they are just trying to set up this law against some selected few in their black book.
Nigerians residing in Abuja are currently staging a protest against the proposed Bill meant to gag Social media. Make una no waste una time President Buhari said yesterday that he will not be signing the proposed bill into law. End of story.
