There has been a fire outbreak at the Kumasi Central Prisons
with the fire service fighting to bring the fire under control. This
has agitated many of the inmates who are fighting the guards in an
attempt to escape.
An unconfirmed number of Kumasi Central Prison inmates are reported dead after clashing with security forces who were preventing them from breaking jail.
The prison inmates were evacuated from their rooms after a fire outbreak hit a section of the detention center Thursday evening.
Some 200 armed police personnel have been responding to the prison break attempts fiercely with tear gas and guns, while the inmates throw bricks, stones, sachet water and other objects at the security forces.
It is unclear whether the inmates were killed by gunshots from the police personnel who have been trying to keep the rioting prison inmates under control.
Three unconscious prison officials were earlier rushed out of the facility to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for treatment. The officers had been hit by objects thrown at them by the prison inmates, accordng to Joy News' Erastus Asare Donkor.
There were reportedly bleeding from the head.
Ambulance services were not on site and the injured officials were being rushed to the hospital in vehicles.
