George Zimmerman arrested on aggravated assault charge
George Zimmerman,
the Florida man who was acquitted in the shooting death of black
teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012, was arrested Friday on an aggravated
assault charge.
Zimmerman was arrested around 10 p.m., local time, in Lake Mary, Florida, according to the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. During a court appearance Saturday morning, a judge set Zimmerman's bond at $5,000, and ordered him to surrender all weapons. The judge also told Zimmerman to stay away from the alleged victim, an unidentified woman, and from Volusia County, where she lives.
At the time of writing, there were no further details on the circumstances of the alleged assault. Zimmerman, 31, is scheduled to appear back in court on Feb. 17.
Since 2013, after a Florida jury found him not guilty of second-degree murder in Martin's death, Zimmerman has had several encounters with the law.
In Sept. 2013, his estranged wife Shellie Zimmerman reportedly told police that Zimmerman punched her father, and threatened them with a gun. However, she didn't press charges against Zimmerman, and later said he was not carrying a gun during their altercation.
In Nov. 2013, police said Zimmerman pointed a shotgun at Samantha Scheibe, his girlfriend at the time. After initially pressing charges, Scheibe later asked for them to be dropped, so she could get back together with Zimmerman.
And in Sept. 2014, a man accused Zimmerman of stalking him, and threatening to kill him.
